Forsyth County Eligible to Receive $249,047 in Grant Funds from the Bureau of Justice Assistance

Forsyth County and the Forsyth County Sheriff's Office are eligible to apply for and receive grant funds awarded through the Department of Justice, Bureau of Justice Assistance, Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant (JAG). The JAG Program, administered by the Bureau of Justice Assistance (BJA), is the primary provider of federal criminal justice funding to state and local jurisdictions and supports a range of program areas including law enforcement, prosecution and court programs, prevention and education programs, corrections and community corrections, drug treatment and enforcement, crime victim and witness initiatives, and planning, evaluation, and technology improvement programs.

All JAG allocations (eligibility information) are calculated by the Bureau of Justice Statistics (BJS) based on the statutory JAG formula and displayed on BJA's JAG web page each fiscal year (FY). The 2025 JAG allocation to Forsyth County is $249,047, which will be shared equally by the Forsyth County Sheriff's Office and the Winston-Salem Police Department.

The Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office intends to allocate its portion of the 2025 Justice Assistance Grant (JAG) funding, totaling $124,523.50, toward the acquisition of essential equipment and resources to enhance operational effectiveness, officer safety, and organizational efficiency. Planned purchases include radar units, ram entry tools, a gas mask fit-testing machine, replacement all-terrain vehicle (ATV), handheld field devices for drug detection, replacement seating, and property space-saving and storage solution at the detention center.

The Winston-Salem Police Department (WSPD) will utilize their portion of the FY2025 JAG funding, totaling $124,523.50, to purchase ballistic helmets, evidence equipment, and a motorcycle for its traffic unit.

Grant scope modifications will be conducted as per Department of Justice/Bureau of Justice Assistance policies, guidelines and procedures.

The application deadline is April 21, 2026.
