On January 30, 2026, Deputy A. Hughes, a full-time member of the Forsyth County Drone Team and assigned to the RTIC as part of the Drone First Responder Program, was monitoring live 911 radio traffic when she overheard a call involving a female who reported that she was on the phone with a friend who had become unresponsive and could no longer be reached. The friend reportedly had a history of medical issues and was experiencing difficulty breathing. Based on recent training and program briefings, Deputy Hughes recognized the potential need for an AED and immediately launched the ARC drone to respond to the residence. While the drone was being deployed, Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office Communications initiated a welfare check at the same address. While hovering over the residence, Deputy Hughes observed Deputy Blevins arrive on scene and attempt to make contact with the female occupant. After multiple unsuccessful attempts to establish contact, Deputy Hughes made the proactive decision to deliver the AED to a safe location in accordance with training protocols. Her rationale for the early delivery was due to the icy conditions and poor weather, believing it was better to have the AED on scene rather than delay until it was requested. Ultimately, the female came to a window and did not require medical treatment. However, Deputy Hughes’ forward-thinking actions exemplify the expectations and training standards of the Drone First Responder Program. Her alertness, initiative, and commitment to mission success demonstrate her dedication to both public safety and the continued success of this research project and program. Based on the actions outlined above, she is selected as the Enforcement Staff Member of the Month.
