Synopsis and Discussion

Despite the rain overnight providing some washing out of particulates, the air mass over the Deep South remains loaded with elevated pollution concentrations and increasing southwesterly winds this afternoon should help sustain Code YELLOW air quality levels for today. A strong cold front with Arctic origins is expected to dive in from the northwest tomorrow and move through the Triad Sunday afternoon, ushering in the coldest temperatures since last winter. Particle pollution concentrations will remain high ahead of the front until it passes by early Sunday evening when air quality levels should fall drastically. For now, the daily average tomorrow is expected to be Code YELLOW due to the early loading prior to the front's arrival, but it would not be surprising if the front is quicker to clean out the atmosphere over the Triad. Particle pollution levels should remain in the low to middle Code GREEN range Monday and Tuesday as the cold air mass settles over the area, bringing the first widespread freeze by Tuesday morning to effectively end the growing season.
